The child with a chronic illness as a learner – challenges for the education system

Joanna Marek-Banach , Jarosław Rola

Abstract

This article examines the situation of children with chronic illnesses in relation to the educational challenges affecting not only them but also the educational system. The needs of chronically ill students and their families are discussed, as well as the role of various institutions in providing them with daily support. Attention was paid to medical, psychological, and pedagogical aspects, as well as areas requiring improvement with regard to legal regulations and systemic solutions. On the basis of Polish and foreign experience, the importance of cooperation between school, family, and specialists was indicated as important, emphasising the benefits of inclusive education and both interdisciplinary and individualised approaches to the needs of students with chronic diseases for their health-related quality of life.
